Does whisky go bad? How to store your bottle

Whisky does not spoil like perishable food. An unopened bottle can keep for years when stored properly; after opening, its aroma and flavour can change. Keep whisky upright, tightly closed and away from heat and direct sunlight. Time on a shelf does not add to its age statement.

Does an unopened bottle of whisky expire?

An unopened bottle does not have a universal expiry countdown. The Glenlivet's guidance says its unopened whisky should keep for years in cool conditions away from direct sun. The closure and storage history matter more than how recently you bought it.

If a bottle has leaked or its closure is damaged, ask the producer about that bottle rather than judging it by its age alone.

How long does whisky last after opening?

There is no single deadline for every opened whisky. Exposure to air can alter flavour, and a poor seal can allow evaporation. Replace the closure securely after each pour and return the bottle to a cool, shaded place.

The Glenlivet recommends three to six months for enjoying its own opened bottles at their best. That is its quality recommendation, not a Highwood expiry date or a reason to rush through a bottle.

Where should you keep whisky?

Choose a cupboard or shaded shelf away from radiators and sunny windows, somewhere children cannot access. The Macallan's storage guidance recommends upright storage and a secure closure.

Should you use a decanter?

A decanter is only as useful for storage as its seal. The Macallan cautions against poorly sealed decanters for long-term storage. Keeping the original bottle also preserves the whisky's name, strength and age statement, particularly useful for a gift.

Does whisky get older on your shelf?
